What are the best european cities?

About Europe

What is the current situation in Europe? What is the crime index? the population numbers? how green is each city?

Smart city dataset

Utilizing different types of IoT (Internet of Things) sensors to collect and manage data - combined with many other technical integrations into our city hubs - defines the future of data & automation being embedded in our urban-living. Think of Smart Cities as a customer experience - for residents of a city. This data was taken from Kaggle.

Population dataset

The dataset represents the number of people having their usual residence in a country on 1 January of the respective year. When usually resident population is not available, countries may report legal or registered residents. This dataset was taken from Eurostat.

Crime dataset

The dataset "Crime, violence or vandalism in the area by degree of urbanization" provides information on the occurrence of crime, violence, or vandalism in different urbanization settings. It was taken from Eurostat, as a part of the statistics on income and living conditions (EU-SILC).

But how is the smart score computed?

Mobility

Index calculated from assessment of city-wide Public Transportation System, ICT, accessibility infrastructure.

Environment

Index calculated from environmental sustainability impact, monitoring pollution and energy management systems initiatives across the city.

Government

Index calculated from comparative study of transparent governance & open data initiatives of smart cities across the world. Also, citizen participation in decision making has been included.

Economy

Index calculated through global comparison of city-wide productivity, economic vitality, and support for entrepreneurship and innovation.

People

Index calculated by comparing social and cultural plurality, education systems and its supporting ancillary facilities across the world.

Living

Index calculated by measuring metric around healthcare services, social security and housing quality.

sustainable goals

The scores cover the same areas as the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. The original survey was made over these goals.

The Intersection of Smart Cities and Crime Rates

Exploring the Impact of Smart Initiatives on Urban Safety

The intersection of smart city initiatives and crime rates has become a topic of increasing interest, with a growing body of research aiming to understand the relationship between the two. As smart city technologies continue to be integrated into urban environments, there is a need to explore how these advancements may impact the safety and security of residents. This is particularly relevant given the emphasis on creating safe and sustainable cities within the smart city framework. By delving into a separate dataset focused on crime rates, it is possible to gain a more detailed understanding of the security aspect of smart cities and to analyze how smart initiatives may influence crime levels, ultimately contributing to the development of more comprehensive and effective urban safety strategies.

So, what is the correlation between these scores and crime?

In this chart we can see the total Smart index for the main european cities.

Let's analyze these clusters

According to the charts,

Crime Index vs. Smart City Index for European Cities

The scatter plot depicts the relationship between the Crime Index and Smart City Index for various European cities. Each point on the chart represents a city, with the x-axis indicating the Crime Index and the y-axis representing the Smart City Index. The color coding distinguishes cities based on their respective regions in Europe.

Notably, two distinct clusters emerge. Cities in Central Europe exhibit lower crime rates coupled with high Smart City Indices, suggesting a correlation between enhanced smart infrastructure and reduced criminal activity. On the contrary, cities in Western Europe form a cluster with high crime rates, despite having elevated Smart City Indices. This intriguing observation suggests a potential decoupling between smart urban features and crime reduction in Western European cities.

Now we can take a look on the crime trend...

How much did the crime levels change during the last 8 years? The population has sure changed, but did the crime influence it?

Results?

This visualization shows us how population and crime rates have changed over time in European countries. We can observe the specific changes happening in each country and whether the rates are increasing or decreasing. It also allows us to compare different countries and identify any connections between population and crime rates. In summary, the visualization helps us understand the historical shifts and the interconnected factors shaping the social-demographic landscape of European nations.
